WannaCry and other types of ransomware are malicious software that restrict access to your computer or network and threaten to delete your data within a set time period unless you pay a ransom. Ransomware authors have only one goal in mind: to extort money.

A ransomware attack relies on organisations (and individual users) not backing up their important files. If you don’t have a backup, there’s no way you can recover the files that have been encrypted without complying with the ransomware author’s demands.
